Katas are just the "vessels" of information, so to speak, as Iain Abernethy once said. They're like the ink and paper of books, but the important part is understanding the message they contain. Today there are some new katas specifically designed for sports kumite, like the Enshin/World Oyama Karate katas.
In my humble opinion; kicking, punching, striking or blocking – whether done in a triple, quadruple or single fashion – are no more kata than a knife, fork and spoon constitute dinner. I believe most kata techniques are simply aids, or tools, for understanding and imparting the principles that justify and govern a kata’s very existence.
all Kata are important as we know, for the Pinan / Heian Kata's being important is that they are pretty basic and form a good concrete foundation for ones Karate. However, a single Kata can do this and take a lifetime of study, also as we know a single Kata is a complete fighting system in its self.
